Missouri Technology Incentive Program

NanovaThe Missouri Technology Corporation has instituted the Missouri Technology Incentive Program (MoTIP) to increase the number of Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) awards granted to small businesses in the State of Missouri.

The SBIR and STTR programs provide R&D financial resources of more than $2 billion to U.S. small businesses yearly. Through these programs, 12 federal agencies provide funding for a wide range of proposal topic areas.

  • The SBIR Program provides early-stage R&D funding directly to small technology companies or individual entrepreneurs who form a company.

  • The STTR Program provides early-stage R&D funding directly to small companies working cooperatively with researchers at universities and other research institutions.

Only for-profit proprietorships, small businesses and manufacturers (fewer than 500 employees) qualify for SBIR and STTR funding. Although SBIR and STTR funding comes with certain requirements, obligations and restrictions, the grantee is not obligated to repay the award or issue equity in exchange for the award. Most intellectual property rights generated on funded projects remain with the small business.

MOTIP Grants and Loans

Phase 0 competition grants of up to $5,000 assist with the costs of preparing and submitting Phase I grant applications. Funds may be used for the development of a Phase I proposal, market research, attendance at SBIR conferences, communication with or travel to federal agencies, analyses to support research or acquisition of data. Bridge loans of up to $50,000 for Phase I grantees pursuing a Phase II grant.

The Commercialization Assistance Program Loan provides a forgivable loan in an amount up to $10,000 towards Commercialization Planning assistance for Phase I SBIR/STTR Awardees. The funds must be used to improve the quality of Phase II Commercialization Plan, with the intent of improving chances for a Phase II SBIR/STTR award. If awarded, MTC will pay the fee directly to a vendor from a list of qualified vendors on behalf of the CAP awardee. More information on how to apply.
